As described in a previous post, one of our events was specifically designed to assist the migrant Hispanic population. When migrants crossing the southern border are detained by ICE, they are stripped of all their possessions, including their shoelaces. From the beginning, they are put in cages, treated inhumanely, and feel alienated by everyone around them. In addition, they do not receive their shoelaces when they are released. For many impoverished migrants, their not having shoelaces reminds them of the inhumanity, prejudice, and adversity they faced. A lack of shoelaces is also viewed as a badge of shame in many Hispanic communities.
Since From Hearts to Soles specializes in footwear and footwear-related accessories, I decided that we should do something to help these people. Using club funds, I bought 100 pairs of shoelaces in addition to roughly fifty pairs people donated to me. On a Sunday afternoon, we decorated all the shoelaces, and when put together, they look like an American flag. This is meant to symbolize that all people are important parts of America, and when people look at these shoelaces, they will be reminded that they are welcome here. No matter what some people may say, migrants can be sure that there are people that will support them in their times of need. In my opinion, this event is special not only because it addresses migrants’ practical needs but also because it helps address their emotional woes.
